Born in Xi’an, 1983, Alice Wang currently lives and works in Los Angeles and Shanghai. She received a B.Sc. in Computer Science and International Relations from the University of Toronto, a BFA from the California Institute of the Arts, and an MFA from New York University. She was a fellow at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, a Villa Aurora fellow in Berlin, and a grant recipient from the Canada Council for the Arts. Through visits to the Arctic, Biosphere 2, the Mayan Pyramids, and other geological, technological, and archaeological sites, Alice Wang investigates the uncanny dimensions of the natural world. Using metamorphic substances such as fossils, meteorites, moss, and heat, she combines scientific, technological, and mythical perspectives to see how materials found in nature can be understood to embody existential qualities. Her research has recently shifted to the realm of the infinitesimally small to explore quantum machines. Like Wang’s sculptural work, it occupies a space between the real and the imaginary. The physical boundary of her work is not limited to its visible expression.
Wang has presented solo exhibitions at the OCAT Xi’an, Capsule Shanghai, Human Resources (Los Angeles), 18th Street Arts Center (Santa Monica); participated in group exhibitions, screenings, and performances at the Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibition, Para Site (Hong Kong), G Museum (Nanjing), K11 Art Foundation (Hong Kong), Armory Center for the Arts (Pasadena, California), Moscow Museum of Modern Art, Taikang Space (Beijing), He Xiangning Museum (Shenzhen), FLAX Foundation (Los Angeles) and Hammer Museum (Los Angeles). In fall 2023, she presented her first institutional solo exhibition in China, “Alice Wang: The Touching Touched” at the UCCA Dune Art Museum (Qinhuangdao), and participated in the 14th Shanghai Biennale at the Power Station of Art. In spring 2024, she presented a solo exhibition at the Vincent Price Art Museum in US, “Alice Wang: We Are Extraterrestrial”. In winter 2024, she will participate in the International Program residency at the ISCP in Brooklyn.
