Anicka Yi (b. 1971, Seoul) lives and works in New York City. Informed by scientific research, biology, and perfumery, Anicka Yi has produced a unique body of work over the past decade at the intersection of politics and biology. Her practice questions the increasingly hazy taxonomic distinctions between human, animal, plant, and machine, and is shaped by an alchemical process of experimentation with materials that are often incompatible. Anicka Yi collaborates with researchers to create media that are often inherently political, and delves into the cultural conditioning of the senses and perception, a process she describes as a “biopolitics of the senses.” Drawing on scientific concepts and techniques to generate vivid fictional scenarios, her diverse installations pose incisive questions about human psychology and the workings of society.
Anicka Yi has held solo exhibitions at museums and institutions worldwide, including UCCA Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing (2025); The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (2025); Leeum Museum of Art, Seoul (2024); Tate Modern, London (2021); Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2017); Fridericianum, Kassel (2016); Kunsthalle Basel (2015); List Visual Arts Center, MIT, Cambridge (2015); The Kitchen, New York (2015); Cleveland Museum of Art (2014). Selected group exhibitions were held at Daegu Art Museum, Seoul (2024); Bourse de Commerce – Pinault Collection, Paris (2023); Aspen Art Museum (2022); Museum of Modern Art, New York (2019); Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2019); the 58th Venice Biennale (2017); New Museum, New York (2017); Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2017), among others.
Yi’s works are included in several public collections including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Julia Stoscheck Collection, Dusseldorf; the Rubell Family Collection; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. Anicka Yi was awarded the 2020 Tate Turbine Hall Hyundai Commission. She is also the recipient of the Guggenheim Hugo Boss Prize (2016).
