Born Tunxi, Anhui, 1965, Cai Jin now lives and works in Beijing. She graduated from the Fine Arts and Departments, Anhui Normal University in 1986, then enrolled in the fifth workshops of the Oil Painting Department, Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, and graduated in 1991. In the early of 1990s, Cai was celebrated because of her Banana Plant series, becoming one of the most representative women artists in China. In the Banana Plant series, Cai explored the concepts of beauty, fertility and sexuality. After living in the New York City for 10 years, Cai moved back to China in 2007. Since then, the images of Banana Plant have gradually disappeared from her canvas. Her recent Landscape series suggest the reminiscent of an underwater world or a cloudy sky. More closely to abstraction, these works move away from the realist description of the nature, but progressively involve the sensual creation by employing lyric and abstract expressions, essentially continue the inner emotion in her early works.
