Born in Yaan, Sichuan, 1992, Chen Xiaoyi currently lives and works in Chengdu. She received an MA in Photography from London College of Communication in 2014. Her works are based on photography but not confined to specific media, focusing on the subtle perceptions of human beings by producing images, and constantly challenging the established logic, perception and imagination to explore the existence itself. In recent projects, she has focused on the past history of the resource regions in Southwest China, taking the mining relics in the Hengduan Mountains as a breakthrough point, to continuously explore the lost mysteries of time, nature and the earth. From the mining relics to current life in mountains, she conducts her creation through the time and space stacking of mountains and lands, and tries to apply “image scanning” of the western mountains in a broader narrative.
Her recent solo exhibitions include: “Streit” (Chengdu Contemporary Image Museum, China, 2020), “The stranger:…and while I blossomed all alone, the world slumbered” (Theatre Crochetan, Switzerland, 2018 / Three Shadows Photography Art Centre,2018), “One Giant Leap” (Matèria Gallery, Roma, 2017), “Never!” (A Thousand Plateaus Art Space, Chengdu, 2017). Recently, her works has been presented in various venues and events, including Festival Images Vevey, Switzerland; Mulhouse Photography Biennial, France; East Asia Cultural Capital Contemporary Art Festival; Jimei × Arles International Photo Festival; Lianzhou Foto Festival; Museum Folkwang, Germany; Times Museum, Guangdong; OCTA Shenzhen; Power Station of Art, Shanghai; Three Shadows Photography Art Centre, Beijing. She won the 7th Three Shadows Photography Award, and was the finalist of 2017 Forbes’30 Under 30 Asia.
