Chiharu Shiota (b. 1972, Osaka) is a Berlin-based artist who is widely known for immersive installations composed of dense networks of thread that envelop everyday materials. Her inspiration often emerges from a personal experience or emotion which she expands into universal human concerns such as life, death and relationships. She has redefined the concept of memory and consciousness by collecting ordinary objects such as shoes, keys, beds, chairs and dresses, and engulfing them in immense thread structures. She explores this sensation of a "presence in the absence" with her installations, but also presents intangible emotions in her sculptures, drawings, performance videos, photographs and canvases.
Her solo exhibitions include The Soul Trembles, Grand Palais, Paris (2024–25), part of a major traveling exhibition organized by the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo (2019), which toured internationally to venues including Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlin (2020); The Unsettled Soul, Kunsthalle Praha, Prague (2024); Chiharu Shiota: Two Home Countries, Japan Society, New York (2023); Chiharu Shiota, SCAD Museum of Art, Savannah (2023); Invisible Line, ARoS Aarhus Art Museum, Aarhus (2022); During Sleep, Museum Haus Konstruktiv, Zurich (2006); and Memory of Skin, Kunst-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art (KW), Berlin (2003).
Her work has also been presented in major international group exhibitions including Between Worlds, Istanbul Modern, Istanbul (2024); Aichi Triennale (2022); the 56th Venice Biennale, Japan Pavilion (2015); Simple Forms: Contemplating Beauty, Centre Pompidou-Metz, Metz (2015); Setouchi Triennale (2010); and Yokohama Triennale (2001).
Shiota was awarded the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Art Encouragement Prize in Japan again in 2024, after receiving the prize as a new artist in 2008. Her works are held in major public collections including the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo; the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; Centre Pompidou, Paris; and the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.
Chiharu Shiota’s solo exhibition Threads of Life is now on view at the Hayward Gallery, London, through May 3, 2026.
