Born in Shanxi, 1985, Hao Jingban currently lives and works in Beijing. She received a BA in Media and Communication from Goldsmiths College in 2007 and an MA in Film Studies from University of London in 2010. Her body of works combines video, record, archival research, interviews and narratives to construct the segments of social history, with film and video to investigate the historical distance between the present viewer and a certain era in the past. In her works, individual stories and collective histories are entangled, from the ballroom dancing in Beijing before and after the Cultural Revolution, to the films of North-Eastern China from the 1930s, Hao weaves together complex historical narratives, social movements, and cultural commentary against the ambivalence and silence of the bygone era.

Hao’s solo exhibitions include “Hao Jingban: Opus One” (Matadero Madrid, Madrid, 2020), “Silent Speech” (OCAT Xi’an, Xi’an, 2019), “Uninvited Guests” (Blindspot Gallery, Hong Kong, 2018), “New Directions: Hao Jingban” (UCCA, Beijing, 2016), and “Over-Romanticism” (Taikang Space, Beijing, 2016). Her works have been exhibited in group exhibitions and screening events, including “Hao Jingban: Beijing Ballroom” (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 2018), “Building Code Violations III—Special Economic Zone” (Guangdong Times Museum, Guangzhou, 2018), the 1st Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art “FRONT International” (2018), “Prospectif Cine’ma: Performing Dramas I” (Centre Pompidou, Paris, 2017), the 11th Shanghai Biennale “Why Not Ask Again: Arguments, Counter-arguments, and Stories” (2016), Kuandu Museum of Fine Art (Taipei, 2016), “Discordant Harmony” (Hiroshima Museum of Contemporary Art, Hiroshima, 2015), “The Civil Power” (Minsheng Art Museum, Beijing, 2015), “Sight and Sound” (Jewish Museum, New York, 2014).
