Born in Shanghai in 1957, Hu Bing currently lives and works in New York. She graduated from the Art Department of Shanghai Normal University in 1983 and earned her master’s degree from State University of New York at Purchase in 1995. In 1984, Hu Bing, along with Jiang Qigu and Zhao Suikang, organized the Happy Friends exhibition in Shanghai, which is regarded as one of the precursors to the ’85 New Wave Art Movement. In 1986, she moved to the United States and studied at the Art Students League of New York from 1988 to 1991. During this period, her artistic practice shifted from modernist painting to highly conceptual installation, where she skillfully explores the tension between diverse materials such as glass, metal, resin, and organic matter.
Hu Bing’s works have been widely exhibited in museums and art institutions around the world. Notable exhibitions include From “Star Star” to Avant-Garde: Nine Artists from China (1991) at the Asian American Arts Center in New York; Against the Tide: Five Chinese Women Artists (1997) at the Bronx Museum of the Arts; Half of the Sky (1998) at the Frauen Museum in Bonn, Germany; and her solo exhibition Scattered Petals, Fallen Leaves, Shards of Glass: The Work of Bing Hu, Working in Brooklyn (1998) at the Brooklyn Museum. She has been awarded the Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant twice (1996, 2000) and received a grant from the Joan Mitchell Foundation in 1997.
