Born in Beijing, 1985, Liu Shiyuan currently lives and works in Beijing and Copenhagen. In 2009, she received her BFA from the Digital Media Art Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing. In 2012, she graduated with a master’s degree from the Photography Department of the School of Visual Arts, New York. Liu’s artistic practice spans many mediums, including photography, video, text, spatial installation, and stage plays, presenting a visual language that is not restricted by region. In her early creations, Liu mainly focused on raising deliberate questions about boundaries. She exaggeratedly used symbolic simple objects to satirize the contradiction between business operations and our beliefs. Recently, based on her multi-cultural life background, her creations have incorporated more than personal comic misunderstanding of the relationship between different civilizations and the current status of nature. Liu’s works cannot be simply defined as PHOTOGRAPHY or VIDEO ART. Whether still or dynamic, they transcend the context and medium in which they are produced, and obtain the independent status.

Recent solo exhibitions include: “Optimized Heart: David Douard/Liu Shiyuan” (UCCA Dune, Qinhuangdao, 2023), “One Room” (Palace Enterprise, Copenhagen, 2022), “Suspended Frames” (White Space, Beijing, 2022), “For Jord” (Tanya Bonakdar Gallery, Los Angeles, 2020), “Opaque Pollination” (Frost Art Museum,Florida International University, Miami, 2020), “In Other Words, Please Be True” (White Space, 2019), “Isolated Above, Connected Down” (Tanya Bonakdar Gallery, New York, 2018), “As Simple As Clay” (Yuz Museum, Shanghai, 2015).
