Born in Hunan, 1963, Luo Mingjun currently lives and works in Switzerland. She graduated from Fine Arts Studies, Hunan Normal University. She is a major member of the ’85 new movement “0 Art Group” in Hunan. Over the years, wandering between Chinese and Western culture, she has always explored the notions of identity and memory through her artistic practice. Facing with the changes in ideology and cultural identity brought about by two opposing cultural environments, she has created a middle ground for herself that is easy to dialogue and communicate with, in other words, a “third space”, or a “no man’s land”. Luo moved to Switzerland in 1987. She has combined Western oil painting techniques with the texture of Chinese ink painting since 2007. In the bright areas with the original color of canvas, the dark areas are taken as the shadow, and the main characteristics of Chinese painting are easily presented, such as the fluidity of materials, the negative space intentionally left blank, and the unchangeable brushstrokes, offering the audience full imagination with simple hints.
Recent solo exhibitions include: “L’autre rivage” (Fondation Louis Moret, Martigny, Switzerland, 2022), “Border” (Kunstverein Konstanz, Konstanz, Germany, 2021), “En scène” (Musée Jurassien des Arts, Moutier, Switzerland, 2020). Recent Group exhibitions include: the 5th Global Overseas Chinese Artists Exhibition “Through Frozen Soil, Desert and Glacier” (He Xiangning Museum, Shenzhen, 2022), “Existence” (Wind H Art Center, Beijing, 2021), “Cartographie du don” (Musée cantonal des beaux-arts, Lausanne, 2019), the 5th Mediations Biennale “Fundamental” (Poznan, Poland, 2016).
