Born in Urumqi, Xinjiang, 1992, Ma Hailun currently lives and works in Shanghai. Ma received her bachelor’s degree in photography from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2017 and master’s degree in fashion photography from the same school. The fashion photography experience in New York inspired her to rediscover her hometown of Xinjiang through the lens. In Ma’s exploratory photography works since 2018, she has shown a strong interest in Xinjiang’s cultural trend, women’s fashion and the personality of the new generation of post-90s and 00s generations, and observed them accordingly.

Her work has been featured in many important publications, including i-D, New York Magazine, NYLON and Artinfo. In the past three years, Ma has held several solo exhibitions at Gaotai Gallery, Urumqi; Mine Project, Hong Kong; Alter, Shanghai. Her works also appeared in important group exhibitions, including “The Discontinued Generation” (Song Art Museum, Beijing, 2022), “THE ENDLESS GARMENT” (X Museum, Beijing, 2022), “Infiltrate Slowly” (Surplus Space, Wuhan, 2021), “I dance with Xinjiang" (M Woods Museum, Beijing, 2021), “RUNAWAY WORLD 2020” (Gaotai Gallery, Urumqi, 2020). And her works have been listed in photo collections of many art museums and institutions, including White Rabbit Gallery, Australia; Song Art Museum, Beijing; X Museum, Beijing; Guangshe Photography Art Center, Beijing, as well as in various private collections.
