Born in Beijing, 1982, Ma Qiusha still lives and works there. She received her BA from Central Academy of Fine Art, Beijing and MFA from Alfred University, New York. Her artistic practice is inseparable from her personal experiences. Working across photography, video, installation, painting and others, she mainly shuttles through the themes of individuals and groups, private spaces and public realms. Her research on individuals, families, and intergenerational relationships has also expanded to understand different social groups in the context of social-cultural transformations.

Her solo exhibitions were held at Shanghai Longlati Foundation, Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, UK; OCAT, Xi’an; Beijing Commune; Esea Contemporary, Manchester; UCCA, Beijing; Taikang Space, Beijing. Her works were featured in many institutions, including Tate Modern, London; The Centre Pompidou, Paris; Daimler Contemporary, Berlin; Groninger Museum, the Netherlands; Kunsthalle Düsseldorf; ZKM Karlsruhe; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; David and Alfred Smart Museum of Art, University of Chicago; Contemporary Arts Museum Houston; Tampa Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg; Ezra and Cecile Zilkha Gallery at Wesleyan University, Middletown; Bergen International Art Foundation, Kunsthall Stavanger, Norway; Portland Institute for Contemporary Art; UCCA; National Art Museum of China; CAFA Art Museum; Power Station of Art; Long Museum, Shanghai; Minsheng Museum, Shanghai and OCAT, Shanghai. She participated Beijing Art Biennale (2015), was awarded 2013 Asian Cultural Council Residency Program and nominated as Young Artist of the Year by Award of Art China.
