Born in Chengdu, 1974, Peng Wei currently lives and works in Beijing. She studied at Nankai University. Her works combine classical Chinese painting and subjects with altered traditional and contemporary materials. She has focused much of her work on garments and embroidered shoes. In recent years, she has expanded her practice by applying traditional Chinese paintings onto three-dimensional objects and creating installation art, without losing the meaning and proficiency. She not only retains the essence of traditional Chinese ink painting, but also brings the form of ink painting out of the plane, from paper into a multi-dimensional space, stepping out of ink painting and finally returning to it.

In 2017, she launched a solo exhibition “I Thought of You” at the Suzhou Museum. The exhibition included more than 50 works created over five years, pointing out a sense of distance and connection that exists in history, space and people's minds. In 2020, her solo exhibition “Peng Wei: Feminine Space” opened at the Guangdong Museum of Art, focusing on multiple series of works from 2017 to 2020, involving ink-painting, installation, video and other forms. In her works, she carefully outlines the buildings, vegetations, trees and rocks, as well as the relationships between the characters that occur in the wind and grass. From a bird’s-eye view, the viewers can peek from outside of the paintings and speculate on the possible storylines. The interactive creative inspiration, the strange switching of paintings and the special tension of dreams construct a female space both visually and psychologically. In 2023, her exhibition “A Room with a Story” held at the Nanchizi Art Museum in Beijing presented the artist’s new works Story Series for the first time in the past three years.
