Born in Wuhan in 1961, Qiu Ping currently lives and works in Berlin and Brandenburg, Germany. She graduated from the Oil Painting Department of the China Academy of Art in 1987 and later earned a degree from the Fine Arts Department of the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK Berlin) in 1994. As one of the few female artists who left China in the late 1980s to settle abroad, Qiu’s artistic practice is deeply rooted in personal experience. She skillfully integrates painting, ceramics, installation, performance and video to explore and reflect on her circumstances and surrounding environment, striking a delicate balance between tradition and avant-garde, seriousness and humor, as well as weight and lightness.
Qiu Ping’s works have been widely exhibited in museums and art institutions worldwide. Notable exhibitions she has participated in include Half of the Sky (1998) at the Frauen Museum in Bonn, where she also served as a co-curator; Heimat Kunst (2000) at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin; the Havana Biennial in 2003; the Internationales Bildhauersymposium (2018) in Langenfeld; and States of Uncertain Domesticities (2025) at Haus Kunst Mitte in Berlin. She has received two Pollock-Krasner Foundation grants (1999, 2005) and was awarded funding from the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia in 2005.
