Shilpa Gupta

Shilpa Gupta (b. 1976, Mumbai) lives and works in Mumbai. Gupta's multidisciplinary practice, encompassing installation, video, sculpture, and performance, engages with the social structure of society as well as with shared histories and their sociopolitical consequences. Her installations often explore how information and emotion are conveyed through the written, spoken or sung word and how these are shared or systematically suppressed.
Selected solo exhibitions include: Ishara Art Foundation, Dubai (2025); Centro Botín, Santander (2024); Amant, New York (2023); MAXXI L'Aquila (2023); M HKA, Antwerp (2021); Dallas Contemporary, Dallas (2021); Barbican Centre, London (2021); Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati (2010). She received the Possehl Prize for International Art 2025.
Shilpa Gupta has participated in 58th Venice Biennale (2019), Kochi Muziris Biennale (2018), Gothenburg Biennial (2017), Berlin Biennale (2014), New Museum Triennale (2009), Sharjah Biennial (2013), Lyon Biennale (2009), Gwangju Biennale (2008), Yokohama Triennale (2008) and Liverpool Biennial (2006). She has shown in biennales at Auckland, Melbourne, Seoul, Havana, Sydney, Yogyakarta, Echigo-Tsumari, Shanghai, Houston and others.
Her work is in the collection of Tate, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Centre Pompidou, Louisiana Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, National Gallery of Canada, ZKM, Voorlinden Museum, Mori Museum, M+, Astrup Fearnley Museum, KOC Collection, National Gallery of Victoria, Ishara Art Foundation, Jameel Arts Center, Burger Collection, Kiran Nadar Museum and Devi Art Foundation amongst others.
Gupta’s solo exhibition What Still Holds is on view at Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin from March 27, 2026 to January 3, 2027. In September 2026, she will open a solo at the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Milan.
