Born in Kunming, 1959, Sun Guojuan currently lives and works in Beijing, with a nationality of North Korea. Sun has never received professional art training. She has been active in ’85 art movement in China since the 1980s, and is an important member of the “New Concrete” art group in the southwest of China. Her works are mainly collaging, installations and oil paintings. Sun’s early works were based on traditional still life paintings, to completely sensoryize flowers, showing her fascination with female psychology and life feelings. After 2000, white sugar became Sun's main medium. In Sweet Dressing Table, Sun used white sugar to wrap the dressing table, a ready-made product with “gender” semantics, and appropriated the conventional semantic “sweetness” of sugar to refer to the private space wrapped in sweet imagination of women themselves. In Forever Sweet, Sun directly covered her body with white sugar, which symbolizes sweetness, and took photos similar to classical portraits. It is a project without deadline and will continue until the artist's death.

The major group exhibitions she has participated include: FotoFest Biennial 2008 (Art League Houston, 2008), the 7th Shanghai biennale (China Art Museum, Shanghai, 2008), “Set from Southwest: Exhibition of Southwest Contemporary Art 1985–2007” (Guangdong Museum of Art, Guangzhou, 2007), 4th Busan Biennale (Museum of Contemporary Art, Busan, 2004), the 4th Gwangju Biennale (Gwangju Museum of Art, 2002), “Feminine Approaches in Chinese Contemporary Art” (Beijing Art Museum, 1995).
