Born in Guilin, 1987, Wang Xiaoqu currently lives and works in Beijing. She graduated from the Department of Oil Painting, Sichuan Fine Arts Institute with a MFA. Wang records a chronicle of daily events and images on canvases by employing humorous narratives and exaggerated effects. Her paintings are influenced by the aesthetics of comics; however, the pictorial senses of material and authenticity are enhanced through the techniques of brushstroke and chiaroscuro, making the pictures linger between the fiction and the simulation. She expresses her understanding of the contradictory nature of painting as a medium through the theme of portrait paintings.
Her solo exhibitions include: “Genealogy Study of Artists No. 9—Wang Xiaoqu: Welcome” (Start Museum Preparatory Team SSSSTART, Shanghai, 2021), “Open Stone Gate” (AIKE, Shanghai, 2021). She has also participated in group exhibitions, including: “Painting Unsettled” (UCCA Edge, Shanghai, 2023), “Shadow Lover” (OCAT, Xi'an, 2021), “House of Perception” (Antenna Space, Shanghai, 2021), “Golden Flow”(CHAO Art Center, Beijing, 2020), “Terminal >_How Do We Begin?” (X Museum, Beijing, 2020), “Summer Fling” (Hive Art Center, Beijing, 2019), “Scaffolds of Meaning” (Mine Project, Hong Kong, 2019), Airport Biennale “Extreme Mix” (Guangzhou, 2019), “Land of the Lustrous” (UCCA Dune, Qinhuangdao, 2019) and others.
