Xin Liu is an artist and engineer. Born in Xinjiang, 1991, Liu graduated from MIT Media Lab with a master’s in Media Arts and Sciences after her MFA from Rhode Island School of Design and a BE from Tsinghua University in Beijing (Measurement, Control Technology, and Instrument).

Her recent institutional solo exhibitions include “Seedings and Offspring” (Pioneer Works, New York, 2023), and “At the End of Everything” (ARTPACE, San Antonio, 2023). She also has held solo exhibitions at Aranya Art Center, Qinhuangdao; M+, Hong Kong; Museum of Arts and Design, New York. Her recent group exhibitions include the 2024 Autumn Group Exhibition at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, the 2024 Sapporo International Art Festival “Last Snow”, the 3rd Chiang Rai Biennale in Thailand “The Open World” (2023) and the 14th Shanghai Biennale “Cosmos Cinema” (2023). Her works have been exhibited in various venues and events, including MAXXI, the National Museum of 21st Century Arts, Rome; The Power Station of Art, Shanghai; Ars Electronica, Austria; Yuz Museum Shanghai; Sundance Film Festival; Tribeca Film Festival; Museum of Fine Arts Boston; Beijing Minsheng Art Museum; CAFA Art Museum, Beijing; OCAT (Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai), etc.

Liu is the Arts Curator in the Space Exploration Initiative at MIT Media Lab, an advisor for LACMA Art+Tech Lab, and she used to teach for the The Terraforming at Strelka Institute. She is a member of ONX Studio program founded by New Museum and Onassis Foundation, and a member of the Silver Arts Project in the World Trade Center. Liu is the recipient of numerous awards and residencies, including Porsche Young Chinese Artist of the Year (2021), X Museum Triennial Award (2020), Forbes 30 under 30 Asia (2020), Inaugural Europe ARTificial Intelligence Lab residency with Ars Electronica, the Van Lier Fellowship from Museum of Arts and Design, Sundance New Frontier Story Lab, SXSW Interactive Innovation Award, Fast Company Innovation by Design Award and Core 77 Interaction Design Award.
