Born in Xi’an, 1967, Xing Danwen currently lives and works in Beijing. She graduated from Central Academy of Fine Arts with BFA in 1992, and the School of Visual Arts, New York, with MFA in 2001. In her current art practice, she works besides photography also in the field of video and multi-media installations, presenting the alienation and desire of urban society, as well as the cultural tension between globalization and tradition. Her photography works are regarded as an important record of the art activities in Beijing’s East Village in the 1990s.

Recent solo exhibition is Captive of Love (Red Brick Art Museum, Beijing, 2017). Her works were presented at Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The International Center of Photography, New York; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; The Centre Pompidou, Paris; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam; Biennale of Sydney; Yokohama Triennale; and also widely collected by the aforementioned art museums, as well as numerous important international private collectors and institutions, such as Uli Sigg, UBS, le Fonds National d’Art Contemporain. In 2018, she was nominated AAC The Artist of The Year. In 2019, she was named one of the “25 Asian Women in the Arts” by the Japanese version of Harper’s Bazaar.
