Yin Xiuzhen (b. 1963, Beijing) received a BA in oil painting from the Fine Arts Department, Capital Normal University in 1989, and now lives and works in Beijing. She is best known for sculptures and installations comprised of secondhand objects such as clothing, shoes, and suitcases, sometimes sourcing them directly from strangers. Her focus on social reality has always revolved around specific individual experiences, weaving private life biographies into the collective narrative of history. Since the 1990s, Yin has actively participated in many important exhibitions and events in the process of Chinese contemporary art. With her keen and poetic intuition, she has captured the lost and uneasy behind the mainstream narratives in the rapidly developing society.

Her works have been shown extensively in various international exhibitions, including Piercing the Sky, Power Station of Art, Shanghai (2024–25); Yin Xiuzhen: Rippled Stress, Shanghai Museum of Glass (2023); Sky Patch, Centre for Heritage Arts and Textile, Hong Kong (2020–21); Yin Xiuzhen, The Groninger Museum, Groningen, the Netherlands (2012), which traveled to Städtische Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Germany (2012–13); Projects 92: Yin Xiuzhen, The Museum of Modern Art, New York (2010), among others.

She has also participated in numerous important group exhibitions, including May You Live in Interesting Times, 58th Venice Biennale (2019); Art and China after 1989: Theater of the World, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2017); Daily Explosion, China Pavilion of the 52nd Venice Biennale (2007); Inside Out: New Chinese Art, MoMA, New York (1998).

Yin’s works are collected by important museums and art institutions around the world, including Groninger Museum, Netherlands; Museum Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf; White Rabbit Gallery, Australia; ARoS Aarhus Art Museum, Denmark; Mori Art Museum, Tokyo; K11 Art Foundation; M+, Hong Kong and others. In 2014, Phaidon Publishing House’s famous Contemporary Artists series releases a monograph for Yin Xiuzhen, who is the second Asian female artist to be featured after Yayoi Kusama.

Yin Xiuzhen’s solo exhibition Heart to Heart is now on view at the Hayward Gallery, London, through May 3, 2026.
