This book takes an in-depth look at the output and achievements of female painters throughout the history of China as well their place in society, from Imperial times to the Revolutionary Period and Post-Mao Era.
In the preface, Tao Yongbai, one of the authors, reveals that the fundamental reason for the “absence” of female artists is the feudal hierarchical gender system and the male-centeredness of cultural concepts, and elucidates “female painting” and “feminist painting”, suggesting that “paintings that come from the hands of female painters, that show women's spiritual and emotional feelings from a woman’s point of view, and that use women's unique forms of expression—women’s discourse, and that are of this sort are called women’s paintings”.
