Ghislaine Leung, GLX, 2024.
A school photo of the artist in its original cardboard frame with a handwritten note on the back. The Chinese characters copied out by the artist as a child, unreadable to her then and now, translate as “To grandpapa from Ghislaine, 87.” Never sent.

Ghislaine Leung (b. 1980, Stockholm) is a conceptual artist now based in London. She received her BA in Fine Art in Context from the University of the West of England in 2002 and an MA in Aesthetics and Art Theory from the Centre for Research in Modern European Philosophy at Middlesex University in 2009.
Based on a conceptual yet personal approach, Ghislaine Leung creates works that highlight the social, institutional, and personal conditions behind how art is made. Since 2015, her practice has been predominantly based on scores – written instructions that allow institutions and their staff to realize her works through their interpretation. Through this approach, she raises questions around labor, productivity, and value in the art world. The form of Leung's works is the result of this collaborative process that decidedly transcends artistic control.
Leung has presented solo exhibitions at institutions including n.b.k., Berlin (2025); Kunsthalle Basel (2024); The Renaissance Society, Chicago (2024); Simian, Copenhagen (2023); Ordet, Milan (2021); Museum Abteiberg, Mönchengladbach (2021); Netwerk, Aalst (2019); Künstlerhaus Stuttgart (2019); and WIELS, Brussels (2016). She has participated in group exhibitions at Centro Internacional das Artes José de Guimarães (2025); WIELS, Brussels (2025); the Julia Stoschek Foundation, Berlin (2024); KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin (2023); Mudam Luxembourg (2023); Para Site, Hong Kong (2023); TOWNER, Eastbourne (2023); The Renaissance Society, Chicago (2022); and Kunstverein Hamburg (2021).
In 2018, she published Partners, followed by Bosses in 2023. In the same year, Leung was nominated for the Turner Prize. Leung’s upcoming solo exhibition at Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona, runs from 17 July to 18 October 2026.
