Women Artists in Singapore (《
Bridget Tracy Tan, 2011Select Publishing
Women Artists in Singapore showcases Singapore’s women artists and their contributions. Curator and art historian Bridget Tracy Tan’s selection of 37 artists and artworks offer interesting and much-needed insights about the role women have played, and continue to play, in Singapore’s art history. The women artists featured in this book are visibly renowned, as teachers of the craft and as artists whose works have been collected by national institutions. Many have also participated in major international exhibitions and received numerous prestigious awards. Among them are prominent figures such as Georgette Chen, Kim Lim, Eng Tow, Suzann Victor, and Amanda Heng.
This book is divided into four chapters. Chapter One, The Legacy of Women in Singapore Art History, traces the trajectory from the first all-women exhibition organized by the Young Women’s Christian Association in 1931, to the landmark 1991 exhibition at the National Museum Art Gallery—the first exhibition of works by women about women. Chapter Two, Polemicising Craft and the Decorative, prompts us to reconsider the relationships between gender, art, and craft. Chapter Three, Three Feet Men and Women: Redefining Gendered Spaces, features artists who engage traditional mediums with the aim of expanding the repertoire of the voiceless. Chapter Four, The Open Window: New Dimensions of Expression in Contemporary Art, focuses on artists who display a profound concern with the relationship between personal identity and social conditions.
The styles and mediums of artists from different generations are creatively juxtaposed to highlight the sheer diversity of their output and influences, as well as their international character. The question of what it means to be both an artist and a woman lies at the heart of Women Artists in Singapore.
